Fortunately, this boulder was so secure with roots that we were pretty safe. But there is still something to say about a 10 foot boulder teetering above your head.

This is their nephew who first told our homeowners to put the pool was right under this rock. This is him taking the first dive.

Nestled into Mission Canyon of Santa Barbara, this pool sits in the middle of an oaktree orchard. We had to do many reviews with county officials to even dig in this spot without disturbing the trees. The reason why these homeowners wanted the pool in this spot was because they saw a huge opportunity to jump from a specific rock into the water. The rock they wanted to jump off was about 8' in diameter. Typically this is something we would use a crane to bring in or we'd build it from faux rock. But when we arrived on site for the first time, part of the pool was already dug right next to the diving rock. So moving/replacing it after the pool was built was not an option. With a lot of caution, we went for it.

Digging the rest of the pool required precision work because there were still many boulders under ground, and we didn't want their movement to cause the diving boulder to topple into the pool hole. Especially while people were working in it. Some of those boulders we moved were so big they had to be first cut to take them out. Fortunately, the precision excavation went as well as it could have thanks to Pat Mills and his guys. We were able to steel, plumb, and place electric in the pool within a few days. Then it was time for the Gunite. Even though the pool was only 33' long x 14' wide, there were huge cavities from pulling out boulders, a cover vault, a 10' depth, and thick walls, causing over 100 tons of gunite to be used. And again, because of the design and element of this pool such as multiple lights, underwater speakers, a fastlane swim system, and a non-pertruding cover vault, things had to be precise. After an all day affair, the gunite was complete which put everyones mind to ease to then focus on the aesthetics. Fortunately, the homeowners had an incredible eye for taste and were not afraid to choose materials that were perfect for their property. About a month later, all of the finish work was complete.

With the hills of Montecito in the background, this boulder stacked wall, customer glass waterline tile, classic shaped pool really blends in well. Also, as an after thought from the entire pool project, the BBQ area gave the backyard a perfect outdoor living space.

This is an example of taking a 30 year old pool with broken tile, etched plaster, and old YMCA style coping and giving it a simple face lift. For the plaster, we converted it to Pebble Tec Tahoe Blue, the coping we just did a basic acrylic overlay, and then we changed out the tile all together. The pool looks now like it was built within this decade.

While the shape takes on an irregular freeform totally custom to the backyard and shape of the house, the uniqueness of the interior is not like any other pool I've done. It is very rare for a pool to exceed 6' in depth these days. This pool is 10 feet deep with multiple shelves, stepping stones, and reefs to accommodate the utilities of this active family of 4 boys. While I can't disclose why they went 10' deep, I will say they have a beautiful 3rd story balcony just one horizontal step away from the pool. This balcony piers out to Anacapa Island. There is more to come on this pool.

With the idea to match the metropolitan look of the house, this pool has a very simple but clean design. It actually sits down about 8' below the elevation of the house with a 10'long x 4'wide x 9'deep sump well that catches all watershed and takes it up to the street. There is also an above ground automatic cover that in most cases would not look great, but truly blends in for this pool. Rather than using wrought iron or wood for the fencing barrier code, glass was used. For the perimeter waterline tile, a mosaic glass with multiple colors were used. This pool makes you feel like you are in a Santa Barbara resort.

With a small hillside in the rear portion of the property, this made for a perfect waterfall and raised spa. The idea was to give off a very natural setting, yet elegant look. Rocks scattered into the waterline, stacked stone, and a dark bottom finish helped to achieve that look.

The straight lines, basic brick, elegant water spitters, and custom painted tile make this pool a perfect fit for the Santa Barbara lifestyle. Surrounded by rose gardens and lawn with horse stables in the back, this pool has a country cottage New England feel. The decking is also Castaic Red Brick poured with a sub base. The spa for this backyard is fiberglass and is kept 20' away from the pool on its own separate brick pad.

Because of the size limitations of the yard, this pool is only 22' x 13'. But the homeowner still wanted to use it as an exercise pool. So the fastlane unit was the best fit. The difficult aspect was setting that unit at the perfect height so the automatic cover did not get caught on it when in operation. The sheer descents give this backyard a sense of tranquility as well as the darker toned tile and tan coping.

This project was meant to have a very resort-like feel to it. The underwater island separates a 9' deep end for diving and other deep water activities. The idea was to give the island a Cancun appeal. On the other side of the pool is 3.5' to 5' deep with a reef step on one side and an infinity edge on the other. The spa also has a deep well so the homeowner could stand in and be up to his neck. The spa spillways into the pool with a natural rock waterscape.

The homeowners goal in this pool was to design something fun for the kids and still take advantage of their beautiful city view. So we did the slide for the fun part and then put a firepit up near their spa which was also raised and has a great view of Simi. We also were able to use a few stones from their hillside to mix in with the pool wall giving it a more natural look.

This pool has two independent automatic covers that are hidden under the leading edges of the pool. The coping is poured-in-place concrete with a wood deck. As seen, the vaults for the cover are perfectly hidden with a blend of the two materials. Because the pool and the spa work off the same equipment, the equalization lines and the tracks to the cover had to be perfectly placed. Due to the cover vault and the demand for a perfectly symetric design, elevations on this pool had to be right on the mark. This pool is in the Moorpark heights and has a beautiful view of the Channel Islands on a clear day.

Because there isn't any decking that extends out beyond the pool, this customer chose to raise it up with a brick veneer to match the them of the home. Maximizing the space of the pool, the spa is placed completely outside the pool with a spillway that first runs into a small trough before going into the pool. This customer did not want a lot of decking around the pool and with the elevations of the yard, it worked out nicely that way. An infinity edge was created as a wading pool which also acts as a beautiful water feature from the home. Copper Lip Sheer Descents also add to the appeal of the pool.

This pool was a tough one to get going. Because of the City codes, we had to get a soils report on this job. However, due to some soil failure in the past, red flags were thrown up in the report which delayed the whole project. Long and short of it, we weren't sure if we were going to be required to put in caissons in order for the pool to get permitted, which cost more than the pool was worth. But after some debate, it turned out caissons were not needed. Instead, we had to overexcavate and pour a secondary floor which was still more than expected, but not the worst case scenario. Once started, we got the job done in 10 weeks. It fit perfectly into their backyard. The sharp-cut stone matched well with other natural boulders throughout the yard.

This pool started out as a freeform pool until the Homeowner decided it was far from what she wanted. "I just want a clean rectangle pool" she said. After taking some tile out and searching high and low for something perfect for their taste, the homeowner decided on the glass tile shown here. It looks amazing!

I met these homeowners at a Home Show and they already had plans completed and just wanted some bids. I think they already got 3-4 bids and then happened to run into me. I don't think they really even wanted to go through the hassles of getting another one. But they gave me the plan anyway. I'm sure glad they did because this was a gorgeous pool to build. I love the entire layout and the homeowner put a lot of time into making sure it was just perfect for he and his wife. It is simple but has all the elements of a perfect California Backyard.

This is one of my favorite designs for someone who has a small backyard. This pool is only 4' deep in the deepest part. It also heats up quicker than a pool. So it can be used as a spa too. Hence the reason for the benches going around the whole pool.

This pool was built as a freestanding structure because the natural slope drops away from the house with a vertical distance of about 6 feet. There were actually 3 different elevations to this property and the pool layout sits about 4 feet from a 10' drop into a city wash. I think the slide actually took the most vision because it is built up into the slope and then drops back down rather than starting from the top of the slope. The reason was because the homeowner did not want to obstruct any view from the house. While it took a little bit to get going due city requirements, it finished out beautifully.

The pretty grecian shape of the pool really makes the backyard classical.

This design is a perfect illustration in showing that a geometric pool does not have to go into a square backyard. The property in this backyard has different angles that are far from square. The pool was meant to look tropical and yet still carry an Asian theme. Although the plant material was not in when this picture was taken, it made the backyard look like it was somewhere in the orient. We also built a small koi pond that simarlarly, was not landscaped when we finished. Both structures together help the backyard to carry a very peaceful ambiance.

I love these properties up in the Moorpark estates because they are large lots with incredible views. From our website, the homeowners found the pool they liked. We changed it up a bit with the materials and added a few more bells and whistles to fit their tastes and this is the design we all evolved to.

These European/Grecian theme did very well in this small backyard. Their plant choice was also well thought out to compliment their pool. Access on this pool was very limited with tight turns. But we were able to capture just what they wanted.

These homeowners had been in their home 20 years and finally decided to put in a pool. Most of their kids had gone off to college or were married and they wanted something for the grandkids. I love working with folks like this because there is a different emotion to the project. It was like working with Clark Griswald from the movie "Christmas Vacation" as he was just proud to get the pool for his great family. We all became good friends throughout the project and during my last visit (right before Christmas), they gave me an incredible loaf of banana bread. I don't know why, but that simple loaf of bread said a lot.

We actually had to demo an above-ground pool to get started. They wanted the turbo twister slide and a basketball hoop for fun and games.

This backyard was a bit more complicated than your average yard because it had a lot of demo and not a lot of room to do it. It also had some tricky retaining walls. Then, after we started the dig, we hit an existing 6'x5'x20' footing that was installed before the home was built. It took 3 days of jack hammering to break it out. But after all was said and done, this pool came out fantastic. I think my favorite part about it are the plants. This pool goes to show how landscaping really can make a pool look amazing.

Trying to blend perfectly with the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, this remodel project was built with Wasatch Mountain boulders on the waterfall and thoughout the steps and spa. The pool used to be just a standard flat kidney bean shape. We added a 2 large reef steps, a waterfall around the spa, a multi-tiered waterfall in the pool, and a planter wall. The boulders inside the pool had to be cut to form around the gunite which gave the appearance that the pool was formed around the boulders. We also brought in a custom landscaper to create multiple elevations with planters and give it that perfect mountainesqe feel. A nice mix of birch trees, pine, and low level Utah native plants spread throughout the yard. The firepit is formed 1/2 with a wall and 1/2 with a boulder. Like the pool, the idea was to make it seem like the firepit was built around this existing boulder. Big sheets of flagstone pavers make up a good portion of the decking area with a little stamped concrete.

This homeowner wanted to push her pool into the hillside to reserve as much space as possible for the decking. Unfortunately, with the city codes, hillside pools require a lot of soils reporting that makes the process almost unbearable. Moreover, once we got the reports completed, the calculations were not copasetic with the structural engineers requirements and therefore, took more time and energy than any of us wanted. The spa has a tiered damwall with a 12" vertical drop at the end. The firepit snugs up to the hillside. The BBQ Island is custom built for their existing grill. The back wall is 36" high.

This is one of those really elegant pools and it fits perfect with the personality and inside decor of the home. All of the materials go very well together giving the appearance of a tropical lagoon.

Pebble Tec: Sky Blue with Abalone Shell

This is one of the most beautiful and complicated pools we've built. The Koi pond and pool actually look like they are connected with a bridge dividing the two. However, they are two separate structures. The cobblestone around the pool is 19th century European. In the pool, there is a negative edge made out of glass. The deep end is 11'. But that doesn't matter much when the pool is 65' long. There is still over 40' of shallow end to play water volleyball and basketball. The spa is all mosaic tile and runs completely independent of the pool. The reason is because it sits 4' below the pool. However, it looks like the pool still spills into spa because there is a 4' cantilever deck over a tiered damwall that divides the two structures. The pool interior is Sky Blue Pebble Sheen. I love that product even with a basic white look. It just looks so consistent and pretty.
